Happy New Year!

Happy New Year guys!  We made it to 2013 - those Mayans were wrong!

I wish I could say our New Year's was really glamorous and hip, but, in actual fact our New Year's was really low key to the point of it never really happened.  So much so that I'm still convinced that it's 2012.  We were in bed by 9:30pm (thanks to E's general ignorance/refusal to adhere to the principle of New Year's Day lie-in's), so we heard no bells or saw any fireworks.  We didn't even have a celebratory glass of something fizzy.  And boy, today were we thankful for our grown-up decision to go to bed early!  We were those smug hangover-free and refreshed people that you see out walking purposefully on New Year's Day!

We did celebrate during the day of the 31st, if that counts?  E's nursery was open so we dropped her off in the morning and the mister and I had a date together in Edinburgh.  We don't get to enjoy little dates together very often, so when we do it's always very special.  We had a bracing walk, enjoyed tea and cake in a little cafe for breakfast (the rebels that we are!), perused some of our favourite shops, and had lunch in our new favourite bar - Red Squirrel on Lothian Road.  They have such a great selection of craft beers that we pushed the boat out seeing as it was New Year's Eve and all, that we even had a cheeky beer (told you we were rebels!).  We had a really great day, and completely lived in the moment so I'm afraid I didn't take any photos.  E also had a great day at nursery playing with her friends - so much so that she cried when we went to pick her up!

It's funny - had someone told me a few years ago that this would be how I would celebrate New Year's and be so so so happy with it I would have laughed at how uneventful it sounded.  But now, as parents of a small child, our expectations have completed changed and you really appreciate an early night, and a little date here and there.

Did you have a good New Year's?  Was it more happening that mine?!

By the way, I'm curious, did you make any resolutions?  If so, what were they?  I wasn't going to make any resolutions but today I don't know how but I inadvertently ended up making a few, and here I am, lumbered with them now.  Here they are:

Be more organised - at work I am super organised.  If I said I was the most organised girl in the whole world then this would be no word of a lie.  What can I say, I'm a Virgo.  I sometimes scare my colleagues with how organised I am.  Yet at home, for some unbeknown reason, this organisation goes completely out of the window the moment I'm home.  You should see my computer, my cupboards, my drawers, my photos, my bookshelves....  I'd like to take some time to organise and clear up everything.

Declutter - This relates to being more organised.  I'm not too bad at de-cluttering - I enjoy it even, I just have to be a bit more ruthless.  I feel heavy when I have a load of junk lying around that we don't need, and frankly, with the size of our house, clutter is definitely not our friend.

Sort out my finances - Again, I'm not too bad with finances, I just need to curb my spending a bit, and cut back where I can, and save where I can.  My job is uncertain beyond the end of March so getting my ducks in a row for then will help no end.

Be a better blogger - my blogging was a bit erratic last year as I was adjusting to life with a baby and then adjusting to life with a baby and a job, so I hope that by being more organised and taking time where I can will lead to more and better blog posts!  Stay tuned for that ;)

Hope 2013 is good to you all - I have my fingers crossed that it's going to be a good year!

xx

  1. I didn't mean to make any resolutions but accidentally did as well. One of mine included decluttering. I like have "stuff" but need to be more selective of the stuff I have and where I keep it!

And we have a nice quiet new year too. My four year woke up just before midnight so we let het stay up and watch the fireworks on telly with us. It was a wonderful way to welcome in 2013.

    Happy new year x

    1. Aww, that sounds really sweet! And so exciting for her to be up late and watch the fireworks - I would have been thrilled with that at 4!

Yes, I'm all about the decluttering at the moment! x

  4. Happy New Year, Wendy! Your New Years Eve sounded perfect! We made an early night of it too, having been out early with our friends to celebrate the English New Year. No hangover for me either - yeah! The next day we were at a party and we indulged in way too much food and I'm still full. Haha. xxoo
